Leadership Qualities of Joshua: Lessons in Courage, Faith, and Obedience
Leadership isn’t always about titles or power—it’s about faith, courage, and the ability to move forward even when the path is uncertain. One of the greatest biblical examples of this is Joshua, the servant-turned-leader who followed Moses and led the Israelites into the Promised Land.
At The Joshua Wave, we chose our name because we believe in that same kind of leadership—one that begins with obedience to God and grows into action that transforms lives. Just like Joshua, we believe in leading with faith, especially when the work is hard, the problems are systemic, and the solutions must be bold.
Let’s take a closer look at the leadership qualities of Joshua, the challenges he faced, and what we can learn from his example today.
1. Joshua Was Courageous
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
— Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
Joshua showed courage in the face of great responsibility. When Moses died, God called Joshua to take over and lead the people into the Promised Land—a task that would involve battles, resistance, and leading a sometimes reluctant nation.
He didn’t have all the answers, but Joshua moved forward in faith, trusting God to guide each step.
2. Joshua Was Obedient to God's Word
“Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.”
— Joshua 1:7 (NIV)
Joshua didn’t lead based on popular opinion or fear—he led according to God’s instructions. His success was rooted in obedience, which meant listening, trusting, and acting on what God had said—even when it wasn’t easy.
At The Joshua Wave, we believe that kind of obedience is still what brings about true change today.
3. Joshua Was a Servant First
Before he became a national leader, Joshua served under Moses faithfully for years. He was willing to follow before he led, which helped shape his character and deepen his relationship with God.
“Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God.”
— Exodus 24:13 (NIV)
True leadership begins in humility. Joshua didn’t seek the spotlight—he sought to serve God and others.
4. Joshua Faced Major Challenges as a Leader
Joshua’s leadership wasn’t without difficulty. He faced:
Taking over after Moses – Leading a nation after such a legendary figure was no small task.
Battles and opposition – From Jericho to Ai, Joshua had to lead Israel through military conquest and spiritual discipline.
Internal doubt – The people he led were not always cooperative. At times, he had to rally their hearts and trust God even when others wavered.
Spiritual responsibility – Joshua wasn’t just a political or military leader—he was a spiritual guide for the people.
“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
— Joshua 24:15 (NIV)
Even at the end of his life, Joshua was still challenging his people to remain faithful and remember who they were.
5. Joshua Empowered Others
Joshua didn’t hoard leadership—he equipped the next generation. He challenged his people to serve the Lord and remain committed to God’s promises.
At The Joshua Wave, we reflect that same vision by equipping and empowering our Neighbors—those experiencing homelessness—with skills, support, and sustainable solutions to lead their own lives toward restoration.
